Eye Healthy Foods – The Rundown of Healthy Fats

When it comes to your diet, it's important to make short-term, attainable goals to keep from getting discouraged

With so many diet options out there today, it’s difficult to figure out where to start. Several diet fads come and go, nobody knows what’s in or what’s out. Research says one thing, the television says another, billboards say another. But countless individuals are struggling with their weight, and most of them don’t even know where to begin. One huge mistake (in my opinion) is the Low Fat/Fat Free diet. Since foods with no (or low) fat tend to taste pretty bad, a ton of sugar is used to counterbalance the scales. And it doesn’t take a genius to understand […]

Eye Healthy Foods – Omega-3’s & Our Health

These extremely useful fatty acids are important to our overall well-being and vital to our health

Omega-3’s are a popular trend in nutrition and have been for quite some time. This is a good thing because these extremely useful fatty acids are important to our overall well-being and vital to our health. Unfortunately for some of us, “Americanized” diets do not provide enough Omega-3’s to sustain balanced nutrition. And neglecting your Omega-3’s can lead to a multitude of complications including hypertension and heart disease. Omega-3’s & Our Health: According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, “Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to provide a wide range of health benefits, including a lower risk of coronary heart disease and […]

Introduction to Eye Healthy Foods – Feed Your Eyes

The path to our best vision starts with refining our diet (in addition to regular eye exams)

This may come as a surprise to you, but there is no quick fix for optimal eye health. Glasses and contacts lenses help us to see clearly, but technological advancements do not make us immune to diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Even though we may not have the ability to improve our eyesight, we can certainly protect our eyes from deterioration. The path to our best vision starts with refining our diet (in addition to regular eye exams). The Importance of Nutrition: Have you ever noticed how you feel after eating a nutritious meal? How about after a […]

Preventing Vision Loss from Glaucoma – (Part Two)

The most important thing to understand when dealing with glaucoma is that it CAN be treated

For now, I’ll use an analogy to explain glaucoma in simpler terms (bare with me). Since glaucoma is the result of pressure buildup in the eye, it’s applicable to think of your eye like a tire. When you add air pressure to a tire, a certain amount is recommended and safe. Now I’m no mechanic, and this isn’t an article about cars, but normal tire pressure is typically between 32 and 36 pounds per square inch, or PSI (give or take). If tire pressure exceeds normal PSI, it may result in problems like premature wear & tear and/or overheating, which […]

Preventing Vision Loss from Glaucoma – (Part One)

Glaucoma is one of the most harmful eye diseases and it can take you by surprise if not detected early

Out of all the major eye diseases, glaucoma is as harmful as any, and it can certainly take you by surprise. To put it in perspective, think of glaucoma like a heart attack. You can go a long time without thinking or feeling anything is wrong, then one day it hits you. And when it does, it’s too late to reverse the damage. As an eye care provider, my personal experience in treating glaucoma has been nothing short of an eye opener. Some of my hardest days at work were early in my career. Since I’m only human, it would […]

Making a Fashion Statement with a Pair of Sunglasses

A cool pair of sunglasses is a fashion statement, but their main purpose is to block out UV rays

As I explained in my last post, sunglasses are very important to your long-term eye health. A cool pair of sunglasses can serve as a fashion statement, but their main purpose is to block out UV rays (which can lead to eye problems). Most people forget to keep their sunglasses on them at all times, but they should be a permanent accessory, just like your wallet, keys, and cell phone. When it comes to choosing the right pair of sunglasses, we’re faced with many options. Some pairs protect better than others. Some pairs offer more style. And some are simply […]

Harmful UV Rays – The Effects of Sunlight on the Eyes

The right amount of sunlight is a powerful asset to our overall health, but getting too much sun can be harmful

The harmful effects of UV rays can pose a problem any time of year (even in winter). That said, right now is as good a time as any to explain how our eyes can be affected. When dealing with this issue, let’s keep in mind that the right amount of sunlight is a powerful asset to our overall health. But getting too much sun can be harmful (to say the least). According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), “exposure to UV radiation is a major risk factor for most skin cancers. Sunlight is the main source of UV rays (along […]

Managing Dry Eye Disease – Treatment Options (Update)

As 2017 nears it's end, I'm confident that help is on the way for the vast majority of dry eye sufferers

The last year has been an exciting one in terms of dry eye disease. The new medication Xiidra made its debut and DEWS2 officially updated the dry eye definition. If that’s not enough, Shire (the parent company of Xiidra) started a public health campaign called MyEyeLove, which increased the overall awareness of dry eye. This marked the beginning of celebrity endorsements in the eye care industry, which has definitely been a game changer. I say this because many new (and existing) patients have been asking me: “Do I have what Jennifer Aniston has?” Personally, I didn’t realize the impact would […]

Decreased Vitamin D Intake Linked to Dry Eye

There’s always a group of dry eye patients who don’t get relief from traditional therapies

Numerous studies suggest that vitamin D plays a protective role in dealing with dry eye. It does this by acting as an anti-inflammatory agent for our tears. Since increasing vitamin D intake is positive for our overall health, I’m led to believe that more vitamin D plus eye drops (as opposed to eye drops alone), could be an effective solution for dry eye. When I see a patient with dry eye, I advise him/her to collaborate with their primary care doctor to assess for vitamin D deficiency. If the patient is below the recommended vitamin D levels, then supplementation may […]

Increased Hydration Linked to Dry Eye Improvements

Because of our not-so-great beverage choices, most of us are dehydrated and we don’t even know it

For those out there struggling with dry eye, a rather recent study suggests that dry eye symptoms can be improved with increased hydration. Per this particular study, the subjects were divided into two groups, then instructed to hydrate their bodies either habitually or therapeutically. Over the course of the one week study, the group that hydrated therapeutically saw slight improvements in their Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ) test results. As a result, the study concluded that “subjects get multiple ocular benefits from increased hydration,” even though their dry eye symptoms didn’t improve much. From the wording of the article, it seems […]
