Minimizing Myopia – Confronting an Oncoming Epidemic

It's important to remember that your eye doctor knows best, especially if/when your vision starts to fade

It’s 2017 and the world is going blind. Well, not figuratively, but the evidence seems to be piling up. According to most of the research taking place, upwards of ten million adults in the United States are myopic (they can’t see far away). Add in the rampant use of smartphones and that number is likely on the rise (along with a whole host of other problems). Luckily for us, our daily choices make a difference. Now, the writing may be on the wall, but the future is still in our hands. We can either turn a BLIND eye and accept […]

OcularPrime (Update) – 100th Post

I've never felt more engaged with my profession and the surrounding landscape, than I do right now

Today’s a special day (in my eyes, at least). As soon as I hit the publish button (for this post), it’ll mark 100 posts on OcularPrime. This may or may not seem like much (depending on how much YOU like to write), but it’s the result of a lot of hard work (trust me). So a quick review of the paragraph I just wrote. You can probably notice my liberal use of parentheses (?). It’s like saying more than actually NEEDS to be said. The sentences still work without the parentheses (try the first paragraph), but the extra words give […]

Making a Fashion Statement with a Pair of Sunglasses

A cool pair of sunglasses is a fashion statement, but their main purpose is to block out UV rays

As I explained in my last post, sunglasses are very important to your long-term eye health. A cool pair of sunglasses can serve as a fashion statement, but their main purpose is to block out UV rays (which can lead to eye problems). Most people forget to keep their sunglasses on them at all times, but they should be a permanent accessory, just like your wallet, keys, and cell phone. When it comes to choosing the right pair of sunglasses, we’re faced with many options. Some pairs protect better than others. Some pairs offer more style. And some are simply […]

Preventing Vision Loss from Glaucoma – (Part One)

Glaucoma is one of the most harmful eye diseases, and it can take you by surprise if not detected early

Out of all the major eye diseases, glaucoma is as harmful as any, and it can certainly take you by surprise. To put it in perspective, think of glaucoma like a heart attack. You can go a long time without thinking or feeling anything is wrong, then one day it hits you. And when it does, it’s too late to reverse the damage. As an eye care provider, my personal experience in treating glaucoma has been nothing short of an eye opener. Some of my hardest days at work were early in my career. Since I’m only human, it would […]

Preventing Vision Loss from Glaucoma – (Part Two)

The most important thing to understand when dealing with glaucoma is that it can be treated

For now, I’ll use an analogy to explain glaucoma in simpler terms (bare with me). Since glaucoma is the result of pressure buildup in the eye, it’s applicable to think of your eye like a tire. When you add air pressure to a tire, a certain amount is recommended and safe. Now I’m no mechanic, and this isn’t an article about cars, but normal tire pressure is typically between 32 and 36 pounds per square inch, or PSI (give or take). If tire pressure exceeds normal PSI, it may result in problems like premature wear & tear and/or overheating, which […]

Introduction to Eye Healthy Foods – Feed Your Eyes

The path to our best vision starts with refining our diet

This may come as a surprise to you, but there is no quick fix for optimal eye health. Glasses and contacts lenses help us to see clearly, but technological advancements do not make us immune to diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Even though we may not have the ability to improve our eyesight, we can certainly protect our eyes from deterioration. The path to our best vision starts with refining our diet, in addition to regular eye exams. The Importance of Nutrition: Have you ever noticed how you feel after eating a nutritious meal? How about after a […]

Eye Healthy Foods – Omega-3’s & Our Health

These extremely useful fatty acids are important to our overall well-being and vital to our health

Omega-3 nutrition seems to be a growing trend in health circles these days. I couldn’t agree more because these extremely useful fatty acids are important to our overall well-being and vital to our health. Unfortunately for some of us, “Americanized” diets do not provide enough Omega-3’s to sustain balanced nutrition. And neglecting your Omega-3’s can lead to a multitude of complications including hypertension and heart disease. Omega-3’s & Our Health: According to the Mayo Clinic’s website, “Omega-3 fatty acids are thought to provide a wide range of health benefits, including a lower risk of coronary heart disease and improvement in […]

Eye Healthy Foods – The Rundown of Healthy Fats

When it comes to your diet, it's important to make short-term, attainable goals to keep from getting discouraged

With so many diet options out there today, it’s difficult to figure out where to start. Several diet fads come and go, nobody knows what’s in or what’s out. Research says one thing, the television says another, billboards say another. But countless individuals are struggling with their weight, and most of them don’t even know where to begin. One huge mistake (in my opinion) is the Low Fat/Fat Free diet. Since foods with no (or low) fat tend to taste pretty bad, a ton of sugar is used to counterbalance the scales. And it doesn’t take a genius to understand […]

Eye Healthy Foods – Highlights of the Mediterranean Diet

Saturated fats are still as unhealthy as ever, but certain unsaturated fats are quite the opposite

The Mediterranean Diet is back in the news as of late. A CNN article from earlier this week highlighted a recent paper published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The paper confirms, “a Mediterranean diet rich in ‘healthy fats’ (such as those found in olive oil, eggs, nuts and fatty fish) might lower your risk of heart disease, breast cancer, and type 2 diabetes.” Dr. Hanna Bloomfield (lead author of the paper) also noted, “I was not surprised because the literature on which this study was based has been out there for a while.” From a personal standpoint, I’ve been […]

Eye Healthy Foods – Vitamin C Nutrition & Supplementation

Vitamin C is water soluble and can only be absorbed through diet and/or supplementation

The next post in my series on eye healthy foods revolves around vitamin C. Also known as “the best tasting vitamin” (in my opinion), vitamin C is water-soluble (or dissolved by water) and can only be absorbed through diet and/or supplementation. Simply put, if you don’t get your vitamin C from food or those chewable tablets we all love, you won’t get it at all. Just like many of us, I was introduced to vitamin C as a child. Out of all the vitamins I was given, it was by far the easiest to consume. As a result, a positive […]
