Emotional Reactions to a Glaucoma Diagnosis

Glaucoma may very well affect your vision, but you can still keep other aspects of your health intact

We’ve all heard of glaucoma. It’s the harmful eye disease that causes damage to the optic nerve. If it goes untreated, it can lead to many surprises including peripheral vision loss, and even blindness. Early detection and treatment is the best way to prevent glaucoma, which is all the more reason to be mindful of your annual eye exam. I covered the disease extensively in Part One and Part Two of my Preventing Vision Loss From Glaucoma series. As an eye care provider, I’ve seen the entire spectrum of glaucoma presentations. I can equip myself with as much information as […]

NightTone – The Next Step in Blue Light Blocking Tech

NightTone seems a bit easier to use than F.lux, but both programs are very similar when up and running

It looks like Mac users have another option when it comes to digital eye strain prevention. A new app called NightTone is supposedly just like F.lux, but with way more screen color choices. I recently purchased NightTone to see if it’s worth recommending. The following is the break down of my findings. Step by Step: Unlike F.lux, NightTone isn’t a free download. And unlike NightShift, it isn’t available on your iPhone (iOS 9). NightTone is only available to Mac users (download the latest version of OS X) at the bargain price tag of $2.99. If you are indeed a Mac […]

Healthy Travel Tips – Flexibility is the Biggest Key to Success

If you keep the following advice handy, an eye problem should be the last thing on your itinerary

Need to get away? We all do. Sometimes. Like many people, I love to travel. But my travel needs may be slightly different. This could be a result of living in an extremely stimulating environment . Things move fast in New York. It’s a place where your senses fire on all cylinders, all the time. It’s almost like a rush. When I’m here, I never want to leave. When I leave, I don’t want to be gone for too long (3 or 4 days tops). I don’t know, maybe I’ve become fascinated. Or dependent. It all varies by perspective. I […]

Recipes – Mediterranean Quinoa Salad (with Chicken)

Healthy fats help the body absorb nutrients like lutein, which is a carotenoid that prevents macular degeneration

Besides all the health benefits associated with healthy fats discussed in My Last Post (decreased risk of heart disease, breast cancer, and type 2 diabetes), they also help with weight loss, boost the immune system, and improve brain function. As far as the eyes are concerned, healthy fats assist the body in absorbing nutrients like lutein, which is a carotenoid that prevents macular degeneration. In sticking with my Mediterranean Diet theme from last week, I’ll start this week by sharing a delicious Mediterranean Quinoa Salad recipe (with Chicken). This particular recipe is a meal in itself. It can also double […]

Xiidra (Lifitegrast) Approved for Dry Eye Relief

Xiidra (Lifitegrast) is the first eye drop to be developed for chronic dry eye in well over a decade

Earlier this week, the FDA approved Xiidra (Lifitegrast), a new treatment for dry eye. According to its press release, “Xiidra is the first medication in a new class of drugs, called lymphocyte function-associated antigen 1 (LFA-1) antagonist, approved by the FDA for dry eye disease.” This is big news to me because Xiidra is the first eye drop to be developed for chronic dry eye in well over a decade. As of right now, Restasis (released by Allergan in 2003) is the only dry eye medication (in eye drop form) on the market. The approval of Xiidra paves the way […]

Positive Stress Management – Ten Tension Easing Tips

Certain people are so acclimated to chronic stress that they're immune to most of its effects

Transit delays are one of my main causes of stress because being late for work throws off my entire schedule. In fact, delays cause me so much stress that I often have recurring nightmares. The story typically begins as I oversleep my alarm, but only by fifteen minutes. You might think fifteen minutes isn’t a big deal, but we’re talking fifteen New York minutes, which can seem like an hour. As the nightmare unfolds, I rush to the subway station, swipe my metrocard and get to the track, but the train doors shut out half my body. I try to […]

Summer Health Tips – Seven Ideas for Healthy Eyes

Our surroundings change around this time of year, especially for those of us who live in seasonal cities

Change is a good thing, and it’s happening all around us today. Cities are changing, the suburbs are changing, technology is changing, businesses are changing, the weather is changing. If that’s not enough, I don’t even have to go to the grocery store to pick up my groceries, I no longer have to hail a cab the old-fashioned way, and Cleveland (yes, Cleveland) is now considered the City of Champions. Now wait a second, I’m glad Cleveland finally made a blip on the sports radar after fifty some odd years, but I think the Browns need to win something first. […]

Recipes – (Vitamin C) Stuffed Red Bell Peppers

One red bell pepper contains over 150mg of vitamin C, which is well above the recommended daily allowance

As we learned in my last post on eye healthy foods, vitamin C is very important to our overall health. This powerful anti-oxidant helps to produce collagen and protects our bodies from sickness and disease (among other things). And unlike other vitamins and supplements, vitamin C is easy to ingest, which leaves us no excuse to be deficient in any way. Vitamin C contains several eye healthy benefits as well. Consistent intake can slow the progression of cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Vitamin C also promotes healthy blood vessels, which is good for the eyes because our retinas contain a […]

Eye-Focused Fashion Trends

Stay true to your personality when playing with makeup and enjoy the process of finding what works for you.

As I explained in my last post, the use of makeup is a time-tested way to enhance beauty. At the same time, it’s best to pay attention to detail when applying makeup because irritation and/or infections can sneak up without warning. These days, it’s not hard to find a fashion expert who can hand out relevant beauty advice. I, for one, am no fashion expert, but I am pretty well-rounded when it comes to eye health. That said, it’s best for me to know a little something about everything related to the eyes. I like to think my advice holds […]

Makeup Tips for Healthy Eyes

The right makeup combination makes our eyes more interesting, but it can cause problems if we're not careful

According to one particular fashion icon, “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself.” While I can’t possibly think of a better explanation of true beauty, most of us still have to face our toughest critic in the mirror every morning, and that’s not always easy. If you’re like me, you’re not completely comfortable unless you’re hiding behind a little makeup (sometimes a lot). Plenty of women can get away with a more natural look (especially in New York, apparently), but plenty choose to cover up (at least a little bit) and opt for safer ground. Do’s & Don’ts: […]
